FAQ
Your questions, answered.
The short answers. For step-by-step guides see the Knowledge Base; for everything else, the forums.
Getting started
What do I need to run netplex.?
An x86-64 (Intel or AMD) Linux host with KVM available (/dev/kvm), 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM to start, and 20 GB free disk plus room for your images. Running in a VM works if nested virtualisation is enabled. netplex. runs only on x86-64 (Intel or AMD) machines. ARM machines - Apple Silicon Macs, AWS Graviton, Ampere, Raspberry Pi - are not supported. There's no client to install - everything is in the browser.
Is there really a free tier?
Yes. The Associate tier is free to start. It has no limit on devices (one running lab at a time) and includes the drawing board, live terminal, packet capture, a built-in login server (AAA: FreeRADIUS/TACACS+/OpenLDAP) and a REST API (a way for programs to control netplex.; API keys are read-only below Architect). It's genuinely useful for CCNA and CCNP study.
Migrating from EVE-NG
Can I import my existing EVE-NG labs?
Yes. Import an EVE-NG .unl, a GNS3 .gns3project or a containerlab YAML in about thirty seconds. Nodes, links and interface assignments carry over.
Do I still need to run fixpermissions?
Never. When you upload an image, netplex. converts it, fixes its permissions, files it and test-boots it for you, and shows each step. No SSH, no commands.
Beta & licensing
Does netplex. cost anything?
The Associate tier is free to start. Pricing will be announced later; see the beta page.
Will a licence blip lock my running lab?
No. A short licence-server outage does not stop a lab that is already running. Paid licences are tied to the machine they are installed on; the free tier needs no licence key. If you move to new hardware, contact us.
Features
Can I run a lab across more than one host?
Yes, in beta: on Professional one lab can run across 2 hosts over a VXLAN fabric, and on Architect across up to 4.
Which vendors are supported?
Hundreds of device profiles, including Cisco, Juniper, Arista, Fortinet, Palo Alto, Nokia and MikroTik. netplex. includes the device settings; you bring your own licensed images and it prepares them.
Professional
What does Professional add over the free Associate tier?
Professional's main feature is AI help. Your lab tells you what's wrong, and the AI can fix it. Through MCP (a standard way for AI assistants to use tools) it builds, connects, sets up, runs and troubleshoots your live lab. Reading is open on Professional; letting the AI make changes (plan/apply with your approval) needs Architect. Professional also adds unlimited live labs, a traffic generator and receiver, a bandwidth tester (iperf3), a network scanner, standalone Wireshark, config-as-code with drift detection and presentation mode.
